Self-regulation is a process of working independently with laid down guidelines to achieve a defined task or goal. It also entails critically looking at the end result with a view to improving.
The aim of self-regulation is to help the individual independently achieve and accomplish a task effectively and efficiently.
Self-regulation gets the individual actively involved in determining the direction of his thought processes and actions. The goal or task has to be of value to the individual, it also has to be definable, measurable and observable.
In the classroom situation, self-regulation helps to actively engage the learners in academic instruction and behaviour modification. It allows the learners to take charge of their situations and to be more accountable for their actions.
The teacher has to make use of variety of tools to get the learners involved. These could be routines, rules, empathy, conflict management tools, good communication, reward systems, motivation and class meetings.
CLASS MEETING
Class meeting is a very important tool for ensuring self-regulation in learners. It is used to discuss relevant issues, resolve class conflicts, allow students to take up class responsibilities; answer student questions and celebrate achievements of students and the class.
It is used to show care and concern for class members, which will lead to trust and respect for each other. Class meeting teaches skills needed for social and emotional learning, which leads to more matured and self-regulated learners. It helps in forming strong relationships in class and sets a positive tone for learning.
Most class meetings take place in the mornings so as to set the pace for the day or week. However, there could be meetings at other times depending on situations that may come up. Class meetings take from 20 to 30 minutes at the discretion of the class members and the depth of the discussions.
Classroom meetings should not be used just when issues arise, they should be part of the class routine to build trust among the class members and the teacher/s.SAMPLE CLASS MEEETING
